Cantonal Prosecutor's Office suspects Duran did not commit the heinous crime alone

(Patria) - A hearing was held today at the Cantonal Court in Sarajevo regarding the proposal of the Sarajevo Canton Prosecutor's Office to order a one-month detention for Mirza Duran (27), suspected of the criminal offense of murder.

Duran is suspected of murdering 60-year-old Nadira Sahačić in the Sarajevo neighborhood of Ciglane. Her body was found on August 19, and Duran was arrested a day later.

Detention was proposed due to the risk that the suspect, if at liberty, could influence witnesses and accomplices, conceal evidence, as well as the risk that he could repeat the criminal offense and that his release could cause public disturbance.

Duran, as heard at the beginning of the hearing, is a final-year student at the Faculty of Health Studies in Sarajevo.

At the hearing, prosecutor Nevena Cvrtak stated that at this early stage of the investigation, the motive for the crime has not been identified, nor whether Duran knew the victim.

– But what is known is that he is a friend of her first neighbor, who lives next door to the victim. The Prosecutor's Office has reason to suspect that the suspect did not commit the heinous crime alone. Two knives were used in the crime, found next to the body. These are cut and stab wounds. The suspect showed extreme persistence in causing death – added Cvrtak, as reported by Faktor.ba.

She also stated that Faris Bašić, the suspect's first neighbor, has already been brought in, and she proposed that Duran be transferred to another penal institution, and that the court somehow prohibit contact between the two of them.

Omar Mehmedbašić, Duran's current defense attorney, said that Duran's father had taken the suspect to the Psychiatric Hospital three days earlier “because his son was not mentally well.”

– My client does not remember anything – added Mehmedbašić.

He proposed that Duran not be detained, but that a psychiatric expert determine his state of sanity, and that the proposal for detention be rejected and Duran be taken to the hospital.

Pre-trial judge Adisa Zahiragić stated that the decision on detention will be made within the legal deadline.

We remind you that it was established that the murdered woman had injuries inflicted by a cold weapon in the neck area.
