Prosecutor's Office of BiH files indictment against Slobodan Karagić, commander of the Red Berets in Doboj

The Prosecutor of the Special Department for War Crimes has filed an indictment against Karagić Slobodan aka "Karaga", former commander of the "Red Berets" unit within the CSB Doboj, who was arrested on December 28, 2015, reports the BiH news agency Patria.

The accused Karagić is charged that, as the leader of the "Red Berets" unit, which operated within the CSB Doboj, during 1992, he acted contrary to the provisions of international humanitarian law and the Geneva Conventions on the protection of civilian persons during wartime.

 

He is charged that, as the leader of the "Red Berets" unit, in early May 1992, he participated in the attack on civilians of Bosniak and Croat nationality in the Doboj area, when members of the said unit carried out arrests of civilians, who, on the orders of the suspect, were imprisoned in a camp located in military hangars near the company "Bosanka", in the settlement of Usora in Doboj.

The accused is also charged with the murder of at least 12 victims of Bosniak nationality who were taken out of the "Spreča" prison in Doboj in May 1992 and taken in an unknown direction, after which all trace of them was lost, and they were subsequently executed at a certain location, at which execution the suspect was present as the commander of the "Red Berets" unit.

The accused Karagić Slobodan is also charged with personally, alone and with other persons, committing the rape of two underage victims of Bosniak nationality in the summer of 1992.

Also, the suspect is charged with the demolition of a mosque in the settlement of Miljkovac in Doboj, which was destroyed in May 1992 by the placement of an explosive device.

Karagić Slobodan is also indicted for, during June 1992, in the Teslić area, together with other members of the "Red Berets" unit, carrying out illegal arrests and detention of civilians of Bosniak and Croat nationality in the Teslić area, after which they were subjected to physical and psychological abuse, and some civilians were killed or are listed as missing.

The accused Karagić is charged with the criminal offense of crimes against humanity under Article 172 of the Criminal Code of BiH and war crimes against the civilian population under Article 173 of the Criminal Code of BiH.

The indictment will be submitted to the Court of BiH.
