Prosecutor's Office of BiH Continues Activities in the Process of Searching for and Identifying Missing Persons

On the occasion of the International Day of Missing Persons, the Prosecutor's Office of BiH announced that it is continuing intensive activities to coordinate and accelerate the process of searching for and identifying missing persons, in cooperation with BiH institutions and international institutions, Patria reports.

In the past period, staff of the Prosecutor's Office of BiH spent hundreds of working days in the field in all parts of BiH, in all weather conditions, often in inaccessible locations, to coordinate the work on the exhumation of victims of war crimes.

In this process, the engagement of the BiH Armed Forces machinery for the excavation of mass graves was agreed upon, authorities in BiH were asked to allocate more funds for this purpose, and a series of coordination meetings were held with all institutions involved in the process of searching for missing persons, in order to resolve all technical difficulties as soon as possible, so that the process is not stopped and unnecessarily prolonged.

Furthermore, the Prosecutor's Office of BiH has undertaken a series of activities and agreements with the institutions of countries that can assist in this process, so activities have been initiated for the creation of satellite imagery in the search for traces of mass graves on the territory of BiH, and in the past few days, in cooperation with the International Commission on Missing Persons ICMP, the National Environmental Research Council and Bournemouth University from Great Britain, with the approval of BiH authorities, aerial overflights and imaging of potential mass grave locations were carried out, in order to find the locations where the remains of victims of war crimes are located.

Searching for missing persons is also important for the processing of war crimes cases, as found and identified remains represent important evidence in war crimes cases. The Prosecutor's Office of BiH calls on individuals, organizations, political entities and institutions in BiH to refrain from unnecessary politicization of the process of searching for missing persons, as this process is primarily a matter of truth, justice and reconciliation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, in which all victims are equal, and the rule of law is necessary for everyone, in the process of building peace and European integration of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
