Turkish internet servers have been experiencing a major cyber attack since Monday, which has significantly slowed down banking services, according to a source close to the Turkish government, reports the Patria News Agency.
The non-governmental organization Nic.tr, responsible for managing internet domain names using the ".tr" domain name, including ministries, the military, banks, and numerous commercial websites, announced on its website that the offensive originates from "organized sources" outside of Turkey.
Minister of Transport and Communication Binali Yildirim, quoted by newspapers, mentioned a "worrying" situation and called for enhanced security measures, which he believes have proven "insufficient".
Some Turkish media outlets believe the attack could be coming from Russia, given that Moscow and Ankara are going through a severe diplomatic crisis since a Russian bomber was shot down by Turkey on the Syrian border on November 24th.
According to the Turkish press, the cyber-piracy group Anonymous has declared war on Turkey and announced that it will continue to carry out attacks on IT systems due to "Turkish support for the Islamic State group," writes Index.
