Turkey on Tuesday summoned the US ambassador to deliver a protest note after the State Department spokesperson said Washington does not consider the Democratic Union Party (PYD) of Kurdistan a terrorist organization, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced, reports the Patria News Agency.
NATO allies have experienced tensions over the PYD, as Washington considers the party an ally in the fight against Islamic State militants in Syria.
Ankara considers the PYD a sister party to the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which has waged an armed struggle for decades.
When asked about the differences in opinion between the US and Turkey on Monday, spokesperson John Kirby said, "This is not a new concern. (...) And we, as you know, do not consider the PYD a terrorist organization," Kirby stated.
Turkey fears that the progress of the YPG Kurdish militia, supported by the PYD in Syria, will fuel separatist aspirations of Turkish Kurds, writes Index.
