Turkey has a peace plan for Ukraine

(Patria) - Turkey wants to freeze the war in Ukraine for more than a decade with a new peace initiative, according to media reports published yesterday.

The plan, presented with the support of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has already been submitted to Kyiv and Moscow, reported the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta Europe, citing its own sources.

The most important points of the document are: the US and Russia pledge not to use nuclear weapons under any circumstances and to return to the New START treaty on nuclear disarmament; the conflict in Ukraine will be frozen along the current front lines; in 2040, Ukraine will decide on its foreign policy direction by referendum, but until then it will not join NATO.

At the same time, referendums will also be held under international supervision in the territories occupied by Russia, the plan states.

The warring parties will exchange prisoners, and Russia will not oppose Ukraine's entry into the EU, it is stated.

A major peace conference is planned in Switzerland in June. According to the newspaper, the Turkish initiative is unlikely to be accepted.

For example, the plan significantly deviates from Kyiv's demands, which insists on the withdrawal of all Russian troops from Ukrainian territory.

Moscow, which occupies about a fifth of the neighboring country, has also recently made further territorial demands on Ukraine after improving its own situation on the battlefield.
