
(Patria) - The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) presented data according to which the number of inhabitants in that country increased by 92,824 last year compared to the previous year, exceeding 85.37 million.
In 2023, men constituted 50.1 percent of the total population, while women constituted 49.9 percent of the population last year.
The annual population growth rate fell to 1.1 per mille in 2023, from 7.1 per mille in 2022.
Istanbul was the largest city by population with 15.66 million people, which is 252,027 fewer inhabitants compared to the previous year.
It is followed by the capital Ankara with 5.8 million, Izmir with 4.5 million, Bursa with 3.2 million, and the Mediterranean city of Antalya with 2.7 million inhabitants.
TurkStat data shows that the number of foreigners in the country in 2023 was 1.57 million, which is 253,293 fewer compared to the previous year.
A decrease in the fertility and mortality rates was also recorded compared to 2007.
"The average age of the population in Turkey increased to 34 years in 2023 from 33.5 in 2022," TurkStat announced.
