On Saturday night to Sunday, around 7,000 Turkish riot police surrounded the NATO air base Incirlik, located in southeastern Turkey, reports the Patria News Agency.
Turkish Foreign Minister Omer Celik stated that it was a "security check", but did not specify what kind of check it was or why it was being conducted now. Speculation has arisen that it is a new coup attempt.
This news was reported by the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet, which states that the police in Adana, near which the NATO base is located, received a tip about a new coup attempt, and that the army was mobilized because of it.
On Thursday, a large protest was held in Adana demanding the closure of the NATO base Incirlik. Demonstrators, who believe that the US is behind the coup attempt on July 15, during which about 280 people were killed, carried anti-American slogans, N1 reports.
