Market razed to the ground: 60 killed, 200 wounded in bomb attack

At least 60 people were killed and 200 wounded in a bomb attack on Thursday at a market in Baghdad's Sadr City district, police and medical services say, marking one of the largest attacks on the Iraqi capital since Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi took office a year ago, Reuters reports, according to the Patria news agency.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack in the predominantly Shiite district, but the Islamic State, ultra-radical Sunni militants who seized control of large areas of northern and eastern Iraq last year, very often send their bombers to Baghdad.

-A refrigerated truck full of explosives exploded at the Jamila market at six in the morning, said police officer Muhsin al-Saedi. Many people were killed, and body parts flew onto the roofs of nearby buildings.

One witness at the scene of the attack said that bloody remains could be seen mixed with the fruit and vegetables being sold at the market, which is one of the largest wholesale markets in the Iraqi capital.
