Trump barred from running in presidential election in the state of Maine

(Patria) - The top election official in the state of Maine ruled that Donald Trump cannot run for president next year, citing the constitutional insurrection clause.

Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said Trump is disqualified due to his actions that led to the January 6, 2021, Capitol insurrection, the BBC reported.

Maine now joins Colorado as a state that has banned the former president from the ballot. Both decisions are likely to be appealed in court.

The 34-page ruling states that Trump must be removed from the ballot because he
"participated in insurrection".

In her order, Bellows says Trump "used a false narrative of election fraud to inflame his supporters and direct them to the Capitol" in the months leading up to January 6, 2021.

She added that his "sporadic efforts to quell the violence and support law enforcement do not immunize his actions" during the insurrection.
