(Patria) - The administration of US President Donald Trump is considering new strategies to encourage regime change in Cuba, including a complete blockade of oil imports to the island nation, according to a Politico report on Friday, Reuters reported.
The potential escalation, which would go beyond President Donald Trump's previous announcement to stop shipments of Venezuelan oil to Cuba, has reportedly gained the support of some administration officials who have criticized the Cuban government, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Although a final decision has not been made, a complete oil blockade could be among several options presented to President Trump with the aim of ending the Cuban communist government. Last week, Trump stated that the United States would stop oil imports from Venezuela, which has historically been the main supplier of crude oil to Cuba.
The newly considered measures would represent a significant expansion of that policy by blocking all oil shipments to the Caribbean country.
The administration's confrontational rhetoric on Cuba comes just weeks after the US military operation in Venezuela, which resulted in the abduction of the country's authoritarian leader Nicolas Maduro.
