Trump's Envoy for Greenland Arrives in Nuuk

(Patria) - U.S. Special Envoy Jeff Landry, appointed last year by President Donald Trump to advocate for U.S. control over Greenland, arrived in Nuuk on Sunday, local media reported, according to Reuters.

Landry, the governor of Louisiana, previously supported Trump's goal of making the vast Arctic territory part of the United States. This ambition was strongly opposed by both the Greenlandic and Danish governments, which have repeatedly stated that Greenland is not for sale.

He is expected to attend the business conference “Future Greenland” on May 19 and 20, and will be accompanied by U.S. Ambassador to Denmark, Kenneth Howery.

The conference organizer, Business Greenland, did not invite Landry, but said the event is open to anyone who registers.

The U.S. Embassy in Copenhagen announced earlier this week that Landry and Howery would “meet with a wide range of Greenlanders to listen and learn with the goal of expanding economic opportunities, building people-to-people ties, and increasing understanding between the United States and Greenland.”

In an effort to de-escalate tensions, Greenland, Denmark, and the U.S. agreed earlier this year to hold high-level diplomatic talks to resolve the crisis.

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen stated earlier this week that an increase in the U.S. military presence is part of ongoing negotiations with Washington.

No official meetings between Landry and Greenlandic politicians have been confirmed during the visit so far.
