WASHINGTON, (Patria) - US President Donald Trump's Special Envoy for the fight against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group Brett McGurk has resigned, CBS reports.
Sources of this television stated that McGurk, who was supposed to leave his post in February as per regular procedure, submitted his resignation to the White House yesterday.
It is stated that McGurk's resignation followed as a result of "strong disagreement" with US President Donald Trump regarding his decision to withdraw US troops from Syria.
McGurk's resignation came a day after Trump's Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis decided to leave his post for the same reason.
Reuters states, citing an unnamed source, that McGurk's resignation takes effect on December 31, which was also confirmed to this agency by the State Department.
Trump announced on Wednesday the complete withdrawal of US units from Syria, explaining that the main goal, the destruction of ISIL, had been achieved.
The President's decision was criticized by some Republicans, while some US allies are concerned about the decision, according to the Hina agency.
US Special Envoy for Syria Jim Jeffrey cancelled a planned meeting at the UN, where he was supposed to discuss the Syrian peace process on Thursday, US officials stated.
Jeffrey was appointed Special Envoy for Syria in August and told reporters at the time that the US would not withdraw from Syria until ISIL was defeated. Jeffrey did not comment on Trump's decision.
The US intervention in Syria began with airstrikes during the Obama administration in September 2014.
