(Patria) – US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced an official decision to ban business with Chinese companies ByteDance, owner of the TikTok app, and Tencent, operator of the WeChat app.
The executive orders for the two companies, which take effect in 45 days, come after the Trump administration announced intensified efforts to eliminate controversial Chinese applications from the US digital network, calling TikTok and WeChat 'significant threats'.
TikTok, which became globally popular in the first three months of the pandemic, has come under fire from US lawmakers as a national security threat due to the collection of personal data of the app's users.
TikTok has around 100 million users in the US alone.
WeChat is not particularly popular in the US, but this app with over a billion users is very popular in China and among the Chinese diaspora as a primary communication platform for family and friends.
Tencent and ByteDance declined to comment on the US administration's decision.
