(Patria) - Newly elected US President Donald Trump decided yesterday to appoint Jared Isaacman, a billionaire and commercial astronaut who is a close associate of Elon Musk, founder of SpaceX, which closely cooperates with NASA.
Isaacman, CEO of the payment processing company Shift4 Payments, leads the private Polaris program which uses SpaceX spacecraft to send astronauts into orbit.
If confirmed, he would oversee NASA's $25 billion budget, which is focused on returning humans to the Moon as part of the Artemis program, a multi-billion dollar project that Trump promoted during his first term, and which will rely heavily on SpaceX's Starship rocket.
The last two NASA chiefs were former politicians. Trump's first man at the helm of NASA was former Oklahoma representative Jim Bridenstine, who launched the Artemis program and convinced Congress to increase the agency's budget for its funding.
Biden appointed former Florida Senator Bill Nelson to lead NASA.
