Trump warns of 'over-regulation' of artificial intelligence: United States needs one federal standard

(Patria) - President Donald Trump stated that the United States must have one federal standard for regulating artificial intelligence (AI), saying that the technology risks being over-regulated if every American state devises its own standard, Reuters reported.

"Over-regulation by the states threatens to undermine this engine of growth," Trump said on social media.

"We need one federal standard instead of a patchwork of 50 state regulatory regimes," he posted.

Trump said that in the absence of a unified federal standard for artificial intelligence, China will "easily overtake us in the AI race".
Trump has prioritized winning the artificial intelligence race against China. Shortly after taking office in January for his second term, Trump ordered the administration to develop an Artificial Intelligence Action Plan to "make America the world's AI capital" and reduce regulatory barriers to its rapid spread.

The rise of artificial intelligence has spurred a number of concerns, including fears that it could be used to disrupt the democratic process, accelerate fraud, and lead to job losses.

In his social media post on Tuesday, the Republican leader called on lawmakers to put a federal standard in a separate bill or include it in the defense policy bill known as the National Defense Authorization Act, or NDAA.

"Put it in the NDAA or pass a separate bill and no one will ever be able to compete with America," Trump said.

Trump's post did not provide details about the federal standard he proposed.
