Trump: Strike on Iran was like Hiroshima, I don't believe they will enrich uranium

(Patria) - US President Donald Trump compared the US airstrike on Iran to the dropping of nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945, claiming that in both cases such strikes successfully ended the war, CNN reports.

"I don't want to use the example of Hiroshima. I don't want to use the example of Nagasaki, but it was essentially the same thing that ended that war," Trump said at the NATO summit in the Netherlands.

"This ended this war. If we hadn't destroyed it, we would still be fighting," he added, referring to the attacks on Iranian nuclear facilities. In his address, Trump reiterated that the US strikes, as he claims, have set back Iran's nuclear program by decades.

"I don't think they will ever try again. They went through hell. They've had enough. The last thing they want now is to enrich uranium again," he said.

He added that he is awaiting reports from Israeli services on the damage assessment, which he believes will confirm his claim of "complete destruction" of the targeted facilities.

On August 6, 1945, the US military dropped a nuclear bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, and three days later, a second bomb on Nagasaki. It was the first and so far only time in history that nuclear weapons were used in war.

It is estimated that at least 200,000 people, mostly civilians, died in those two attacks. Japan announced its unconditional surrender a few days later, on August 15, 1945, thus ending World War II.
