Trump claims US 'sovereignty' lost in New York after Mamdani victory

(Patria) - President Donald Trump said the United States had lost 'sovereignty' after New Yorkers elected leftist Zohran Mamdani as their mayor.

'We'll take care of that,' Trump said without explaining what he meant, claiming the country's largest city would become communist, AFP reported.

In a speech in Miami the day after Mamdani's convincing victory, Trump added that the city of Florida 'will soon be a haven for those fleeing communism in New York.'

'The decision facing all Americans could not be clearer: We have a choice between communism and common sense,' he said, describing the choice as between 'an economic nightmare' and 'an economic miracle.'

The speech marked the first anniversary of Trump's election victory against Democratic candidate Kamala Harris.

'We saved our economy, reclaimed our freedom, and together we saved our country on that magnificent night 365 days ago,' Trump told his supporters.

Mamdani's victory in the mayoral election came despite fierce attacks on his policies and Muslim heritage by business elites, conservative media commentators, and Trump himself.

'If anyone can show the nation betrayed by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is the city that produced him,' Mamdani said in a victory speech late Tuesday.

Mamdani's victory, along with other Democratic Party wins in gubernatorial races in Virginia and New Jersey, suggests a shift in political mood as the country prepares for midterm elections next year, when control of Congress will be at stake.

In another significant win for Democrats, voters in California approved a proposal to redraw electoral districts in an effort to neutralize gerrymandering attempts ordered by Trump in other states.

Trump refused to take any blame for Tuesday's results.

In a post on his social media platform Truth, he cited anonymous 'pollsters' suggesting that Republican defeats were due to 'the government shutdown' and the fact that his name was not on the ballot.
