Trump arrives in Milwaukee: I have an opportunity to unite the whole country

(Patria) - Donald Trump has traveled to Milwaukee where Republicans will officially nominate him for their presidential candidate this week, after surviving an assassination attempt that has further inflamed political divisions in the US.

In his first interview after the assassination attempt, he said he wants his speech to send a message of unity instead of criticizing Joe Biden.

He spoke with Salena Zito from The Washington Examiner, who was present at the rally in Pennsylvania, where attacker Thomas Matthew Crooks shot at Trump (and killed a rally participant) before being killed by the Secret Service.

"The speech I intended to give on Thursday would have been impressive. It would have been brutal. I think it would have been very bad if, after all this, I started ranting about how everyone is terrible, how corrupt and rotten they are. Now I have a speech that unites," Trump said.

"If this hadn't happened, it would have been one of the most incredible speeches. Honestly, now it will be a completely different speech," Trump said.

"This is an opportunity to unite the whole country, even the whole world. The speech will be much different, much different than it would have been two days ago," he added.

Trump said the bullet grazed him at Saturday's rally when he looked to the right to watch a video clip being shown on the screen.

"I almost never take my eyes off the audience at rallies. I rarely look away from the crowd, and that was a move that probably saved my life. If I hadn't done that at that moment, well, we wouldn't be talking today, would we?" he said.

Trump was also asked about the moment he raised his fist and shouted "fight." He said he wanted to assure those present that he was okay and that "America goes on."

"The energy that was coming from the people there at that moment — they were just standing; it's hard to describe what that feeling is like, but I knew the whole world was watching," he said.

"I knew history would judge it, and I knew I had to let them know I was okay."

CNN reported that Trump underwent a precautionary CT scan yesterday after the shooting.
