(Patria) – US President Donald Trump has vetoed a resolution passed by both houses of Congress that limits the president's constitutional authority to declare war.
- This is a very insulting resolution introduced by Democrats as part of their strategy to win the elections on November 3 by dividing the Republican Party, according to a statement by President Trump released by the White House. 'The few Republicans who voted for this bill did them a favor,' Trump notes.
The Senate, where Republicans hold a majority (53 to 47 Democrats), is expected to support Trump's veto with a majority vote as early as Thursday.
The resolution, passed by the House of Representatives in March and the Senate in April, was Congress's latest attempt to limit the White House's constitutional powers to declare war.
Several Republicans in both houses supported the resolution, which is not enough for the two-thirds majority needed to override the veto, Reuters reports.
