Trump ready to provide security guarantees to Ukraine on condition of ceasefire

(Patria) - US President Donald Trump told European leaders and the President of Ukraine that the US is ready, under certain conditions, to provide security guarantees to Kyiv, reports Politico. The message was conveyed during a virtual meeting organized by Germany, ahead of Trump's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska.

According to sources, Washington would support strengthening Ukraine's capabilities to deter future Russian aggression, but only if a ceasefire is reached, and the guarantees would not be part of the NATO framework. Trump clearly stated that the US will not directly send weapons or troops to Ukraine, but will sell weapons to European countries that would then supply them to Kyiv.

Such a model has caused cautious optimism, but also fears that it could disappoint some of Ukraine's allies who are seeking stronger guarantees.
