Trump appeals Illinois court ruling barring him from running

(Patria) - Former US President Donald Trump yesterday appealed the decision of an Illinois judge who banned him from running in the state's Republican primaries due to his role in the alleged incitement of the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot.

In her decision on Wednesday, Cook County Judge Tracie Porter sided with Illinois voters who believe Trump should be disqualified from the state's March 19 primaries and the November 5 presidential election, Hina reported.

Trump appealed that decision yesterday, a day after his campaign called it unconstitutional.

Porter ruled that Trump violated the 14th Amendment's clause prohibiting anyone who has "engaged in insurrection or rebellion" against the US or aided or comforted the nation's enemies from holding public office.

The outcome of the Illinois case will likely be decided by the Supreme Court, as with similar legal processes.

Trump's candidacy is also being challenged in Colorado and Maine.

The Supreme Court, with its conservative majority, showed skepticism towards Colorado's arguments earlier this month.

Two liberal justices – Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson – also showed reluctance to uphold the state's call to ban the Republican's candidacy, the New York Times wrote.

On January 6, 2021, Trump's supporters attacked police and stormed the US Capitol in an attempt to prevent the certification of the electoral victory of Democratic President Joe Biden.

Before those events, Trump gave a fiery speech, telling his supporters to head to the Capitol.

The final decision of the highest US court is expected before March 5, so-called 'Super Tuesday,' when Colorado, Maine, and 13 other states hold primaries.
