Trump hopes Israel and Iran will reach a ceasefire agreement

(Patria) - President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he hopes Israel and Iran can reach a ceasefire, Al Arabiya reported.

Talking to reporters before leaving for the G7 summit in Canada, Trump said that the United States will continue to support Israel, but refused to say whether he had asked the American ally to pause attacks on Iran.

Citing two US officials, Reuters reported on Sunday that Trump had vetoed an Israeli plan to assassinate Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in recent days.

Asked about Reuters' report, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Sunday:

"There are so many false reports about conversations that never happened, and I will not get into that."

Trump praised the Israeli offensive, while denying Iranian accusations that the US participated.

"If Iran attacks us in any way, the full force and power of the American armed forces will descend upon you at levels never seen before," he said in a message on the Truth Social platform.

"However, we can easily reach an agreement between Iran and Israel and end this bloody conflict."

Trump had previously stated that the US had no role in the Israeli attack and warned Tehran not to extend its retaliation to US targets. The US military helped shoot down Iranian missiles aimed at Israel, two US officials said on Friday.

The US president has repeatedly said that Iran could end the war by agreeing to strict limits on its nuclear program, which Iran claims is for peaceful purposes, but Western countries say could be used to build an atomic bomb.

The latest round of nuclear talks between Iran and the US, scheduled for Sunday, was canceled after Tehran said it would not negotiate while under Israeli attack.
