(Patria) - US President Donald Trump spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and European and NATO officials, following a meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, where no agreement was reached on ending the war in Ukraine.
A spokesperson for European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said that European leaders held a second conversation after the talks with Trump to consider next steps regarding the conflict in Ukraine.
On Saturday morning, Trump spoke for more than an hour with Zelenskyy, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and the President of the European Commission.
According to a statement from the Ukrainian presidency, Trump first spoke with Zelenskyy, after which the other European leaders joined the conversation. The White House also confirmed this call.
The talks between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska showed that the Russian president is not seeking peace, but wants to weaken Western unity, Czech Defense Minister Jana Černochová said on Saturday.
"The Trump-Putin talks in Alaska did not bring significant progress toward ending the war in Ukraine, but they confirmed that Putin is not seeking peace, but an opportunity to weaken Western unity and spread his propaganda," she wrote on X, adding that the West must continue to support Ukraine, reports Radio Free Europe.
Kremlin adviser Yuri Ushakov said on Saturday that the issue of holding a trilateral summit between the Russian, American, and Ukrainian presidents was not discussed, reported Russian state agency TASS.
Ushakov added that it is not yet known when Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump will meet again after the summit on Friday in Alaska.
Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Saturday that the summit in Alaska between Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump proved that it is possible to hold talks without preconditions, even as fighting in Ukraine continues.
Trump did not reach an agreement to end the war in Ukraine, although he gave Putin a ceremonial welcome.
In a brief, three-minute statement to reporters after a three-hour meeting with Putin, Trump said his team had made "great progress," but that "we haven't quite gotten there yet" and that no agreement was reached to end the Kremlin's war against Ukraine.
Trump stated that "there is no deal until a deal is made."
On the other hand, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the two had reached an "understanding" on Ukraine and warned Europe not to "reject the beginnings of progress."
In an interview with Fox News Channel before leaving Alaska, Trump insisted that in the future the burden could be on Zelenskyy "to get it done," but added that European countries would also have a role to play.
Trump did not speak to reporters during the flight back to Washington.
On the night between Friday and Saturday, a few hours after the conclusion of the meeting in Alaska, Russia attacked Ukrainian cities with drones, official Kyiv reported.
Russia's invasion of Ukraine, launched by Putin in February 2022, has claimed thousands of lives.
