(Patria) - US President Donald Trump stated yesterday that he is "not kidding" when he says he is looking into how he could serve a third presidential term, although it is prohibited by the Constitution.
- There are methods by which it could be done - Trump told NBC News in a phone interview, but added that it is "too early to think about it".
The Associated Press (AP) assesses that this is the clearest indication that Trump is considering how to overcome the constitutional barrier that would prevent him from being president again when his second term ends in early 2029.
According to the 22nd Amendment, added to the Constitution in 1951, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt was elected four times in a row, "no person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice".
The journalist asked Trump if one potential path to a third term would be for Vice President J.D. Vance to run for president, and then "pass the baton" to him.
Trump replied that it is "one way", but that there are others.
The journalist also asked him if he could name another way, to which Trump replied "no".
He hinted that Americans would support his third term due to his popularity, and claimed, as AP writes, incorrectly, that he has the highest approval ratings of any Republican in the last 100 years.
AP reminds that Trump has mentioned serving more than two terms before, mostly in the form of jokes in front of friendly audiences.
