(Patria) - US President Donald Trump called Thailand and Cambodia on Friday to strengthen a brokered peace deal after new clashes broke out between the Southeast Asian neighbors, the White House said, Reuters reported.
Trump co-signed a ceasefire between the two countries on October 26 during his tour of Asia, presenting it as one of several peace deals around the world that he believes should earn him a Nobel Prize.
But Thailand suspended the agreement on Monday after a landmine explosion, and the two sides exchanged accusations of new clashes on Wednesday, in which, according to Phnom Penh, one civilian was killed.
“President Trump made calls to Thailand and Cambodia in an effort to mediate the latest conflict,” the White House said. “He also engaged with Malaysia to help end the violence.”
Malaysia acted as a mediator to end the conflict, and Trump co-signed the agreement in Kuala Lumpur.
Five days of fighting broke out between Thailand and Cambodia this summer, killing 43 people and displacing about 300,000 before a ceasefire came into effect.
Thailand and Cambodia have a dispute over parts of the border that dates back more than a century, but the July clashes were triggered by Thailand's claims that Cambodia had planted mines that injured its soldiers.
