(Patria) - US President Donald Trump accepted the invitation of Recep Tayyip Erdogan to visit Turkey next year, confirmed the spokesperson for the Turkish leader Ibrahim Kalin.
Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting in Ankara, Kalin added that Trump responded positively to Erdogan's invitation, but that the date of the visit has not been defined.
Erdogan extended the invitation to Trump last weekend in a phone call, following the US president's decision to withdraw troops from Syria.
"While nothing concrete is planned, the president is open to a potential meeting," White House spokesperson Hogan Gidley said in a statement.
The conflict in Syria, the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in the Istanbul consulate, and Turkey's request for the extradition of US-based imam Fethullah Gulen, whom Ankara accuses of the failed coup in 2016, are some of the main issues in the relationship between the two NATO allies.
