(Patria) - US President Donald Trump stated that he believes talks on ending the war in Ukraine are "approaching something" ahead of the US meeting with Russian officials this weekend.
Trump is sending Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to meet with the Russian delegation in Miami this weekend, a White House official said, as they continue to try to force an agreement from both Russia and Ukraine to end Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Reuters reported.
Witkoff and Kushner met with the Ukrainian delegation for two days in Berlin on Sunday and Monday, and US officials said they left with the conviction that the two sides were not far apart, although the most difficult issue, Russia's insistence on obtaining Ukrainian territory in any agreement, remains unresolved.
Public opinion polls in Ukraine have shown that few Ukrainians are willing to accept territorial concessions, which remain a key Russian condition for ending the war. Russians have little willingness to compromise on their stated demands.
"I hope Ukraine will act quickly because Russia is there," Trump said, an obvious allusion to recent Russian battlefield successes. Ukraine could receive security guarantees modeled on NATO's Article 5 mutual defense commitment within a proposed peace agreement with Russia - an unprecedented offer aimed at ending the war caused by Moscow's 2022 invasion.
