(Patria) - US President Donald Trump signed an executive order yesterday ordering the judicial system to punish those who burn or desecrate the American flag.
- If you burn the flag, you will be sentenced to one year in prison, with no possibility of early release - Trump said while signing the order in the Oval Office.
The order directs judges to punish individuals who violate flag desecration laws, and to initiate lawsuits to clarify the scope of the First Amendment regarding this issue.
It also requested that visas, residency permits, and naturalization procedures be suspended for offenders.
"The American flag is a symbol of our national life, which should unite and represent all Americans.
Desecration is a very offensive and provocative act. It is an expression of contempt, hostility, and violence towards our nation," the order states.
The Trump administration claims that the Supreme Court ruling on the First Amendment does not protect actions such as desecrating the American flag.
However, the Supreme Court ruled in 1989 that burning or destroying the national flag constitutes a protected form of free speech.
