(Patria) - US President Donald Trump believes the slowdown in US economic activity is a result of what was left behind by his predecessor Joe Biden and has "nothing to do with tariffs" that he imposed on a large number of countries.
"Our country will take off economically, but first, we need to get rid of Joe Biden's legacy.
This will take some time, and it has nothing to do with tariffs, it's just that he left us with bad statistics," Trump wrote on his social network Truth Social, urging his compatriots to "have patience".
Economic growth in the US fell by 0.3 percent in the first quarter of this year, marking the first contraction of the US economy since the pandemic year of 2022, according to preliminary estimates released yesterday by the Department of Commerce in Washington.
This represents a sharp decline after a growth of 2.4 percent annually in the previous quarter (October to December 2024).
The driver of the GDP decline was, according to media reports, primarily a strong increase in imports, as companies sought to buy more goods before the tariffs announced by Trump were implemented.
