(Patria) - Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's campaign and the Republican National Committee (RNC) announced on Monday that they raised $141 million in May, nearly double the previous month, thanks to a surge in support following a court verdict.
This includes $53 million that the Trump campaign said it raised in the 24 hours after a New York jury convicted the former president of falsifying business records related to a hush-money payment to a porn star on the eve of the 2016 presidential election, Reuters reported.
For months, Trump and his allies have worked to portray the prosecution as politically motivated and orchestrated by President Joe Biden, although there is no evidence that Biden played any role in the case. In a statement, the campaign and the RNC said the fundraising showed that supporters saw through the "disgraceful Biden trial" and that the verdict had angered and motivated Americans.
Until the past few months, Biden's re-election campaign routinely outraised Trump's in fundraising ahead of the November 5 election. Trump first outraised Biden in April, raising $76 million. Biden's campaign, which has not yet released its total fundraising for May, had one of its best 24-hour fundraising periods after the jury found Trump guilty, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Trump's campaign and the RNC said they received more than two million donations in May, averaging $70.27 each. It stated that a quarter of the monthly donors gave for the first time this election cycle.
Those numbers will not be confirmed until filings are submitted to the Federal Election Commission.
