Trump announces Coca-Cola will change key ingredient in the United States

(Patria) - President Donald Trump said that Coca-Cola has agreed to use real cane sugar in its drinks sold in the United States, the BBC reported.

Coca-Cola uses corn syrup in its American products, but Trump's Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. expressed concern about the health impact of this ingredient.

"I spoke with Coca-Cola about using REAL cane sugar in Coca-Cola in the United States and they agreed to do so," Trump wrote in a post on his social media platform Truth Social.

"I would like to thank everyone in charge at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move on their part - you will see. It's simply better."

While Coca-Cola sold in the United States is typically sweetened with corn syrup, Coca-Cola in other countries, such as Mexico and the United Kingdom, usually uses cane sugar.

In April, Coca-Cola CEO James Quincey told investors that "we continue to make progress in reducing sugar in our drinks."

Quincey said the company "has done this by changing recipes, as well as using our global marketing resources and distribution network to raise awareness and interest in our ever-growing portfolio."

Kennedy and his "Make America Healthy Again" movement have advocated for American companies to remove ingredients such as corn syrup, seed oils and artificial colors from their products, linking them to a range of health problems.

He criticized the amount of sugar Americans consume and reportedly plans to update national dietary guidelines this summer.

Trump regularly drinks Diet Coke, which uses the artificial sweetener aspartame. He had a button installed on the Resolute Desk in the Oval Office of the White House so that the carbonated drink could be served to him.
