US President Donald Trump said on Sunday he would defend Poland and the Baltic states in the event of an escalation of the conflict from Russia, following an incursion into Estonian airspace.
Asked whether he would help defend European Union members if Russia intensifies hostilities, Trump told reporters: "Yes, I would. I would."
Estonia requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Monday following the incursion on Friday, AFP reported.
Three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated Estonian airspace over the Gulf of Finland, prompting complaints of a dangerous new provocation from the European Union and NATO, but denials from Moscow.
Italian F-35 fighter jets, attached to the NATO air defense support mission in the Baltic states, together with Swedish and Finnish aircraft, took off to intercept the Russian planes.
Asked whether he had been informed about the situation in Estonia, Trump answered in the affirmative and added: "We don't like that."
His statement came about two weeks after around seventeen Russian drones violated Polish airspace, an incident Trump subsequently tried to downplay. "It could have been a mistake," Trump told reporters at the time.
