(Patria) - US President Donald Trump today commented on Russian President Vladimir Putin's proposal for direct negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, stating that it would be "potentially a great day for Russia and Ukraine".
"Think of the hundreds of thousands of lives that will be saved if this endless 'bloodshed' hopefully comes to an end. It will be a completely new and much better world. I will continue to work with both sides to ensure this happens. The US wants to focus on reconstruction and trade instead of (war). A big week is ahead of us," Trump said in a post on the social network TruthSocial.
Russian President Vladimir Putin proposed that Russia and Ukraine hold direct negotiations, "without any preconditions" on May 15 in Istanbul, Russian media reported.
As he said, he will personally address Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to organize the talks.
The Russian leader added that Russia is focused on conducting serious negotiations with Ukraine to eliminate the root causes of the conflict.
Ukraine has not yet responded to this proposal.
