(Patria) - U.S. President Donald Trump offered yesterday to mediate in the dispute over the waters of the Nile River between Egypt and Ethiopia, Reuters reported.
"I am ready to relaunch American mediation between Egypt and Ethiopia to responsibly resolve the issue of 'Nile water sharing' once and for all," he wrote to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi in a letter, published on Trump's profile on the Truth Social platform.
The opening of the "Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam" in Addis Ababa on September 9 sparked anger in Cairo, which is located downstream on the Nile.
Ethiopia, the second most populous nation on the continent with over 120 million people, considers the five-billion-dollar dam on a tributary of the Nile crucial for its economic ambitions.
Egypt claims the dam violates international treaties and could cause both droughts and floods, which Ethiopia denies.
