Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and Republican candidate Donald Trump faced off last night in the first presidential debate, reports the Patria News Agency.
The debate marked the entry into the final stage of a contest already declared the most important in modern American history.
The candidates discussed their presidential qualities, taxes, racial tensions, Barack Obama, national security, domestic terrorism, and nuclear weapons. Here are some of the questions and answers given by the candidates.
Will you accept the outcome of the election, one of you must lose?
Clinton: I will accept the will of the voters.
Trump: I want America to be great again. If she wins, I will accept it.
Question about Barack Obama and the current president's birthplace.
Trump: I made Obama show us his birth certificate. I'm the one who did it, and I think I did a good job with it.
Clinton: As Donald has admitted, he knew he would get this question. He tried to deny lying about Obama not being born in the US. He advocated the thesis that our first black president is not an American citizen. That is a racist lie.
Trump: Clinton treated Obama with almost no respect.
When asked why he doesn't want to release his tax returns, Trump said he has no problem with it.
Trump: I will release them after she releases all her deleted emails, all 33,000 of them.
Clinton: For 40 years, all candidates have released their tax returns. One has to wonder why he doesn't want to do that. Maybe he's not as wealthy as he says. Maybe he doesn't donate to charity as he says. Maybe he owes a lot. Maybe he doesn't want the public to know how much he paid in federal taxes. I don't think he will ever release those records because he is hiding something. As for my emails, I made a mistake. I take responsibility for that.
Trump: That wasn't a mistake, it was done intentionally. It was an illegal server. It was a disgrace, this country thinks it was a disgrace.
Clinton: Trump has declared bankruptcy 6 times. He called himself the king of debt. I think some of those things are disastrous if they come to government.
Trump: I built an incredible company. Tens of thousands of people are incredibly happy and love me because they work with me.
