(Patria) - US President Donald Trump has ordered the Pentagon to buy electricity from coal-fired power plants, AFP reported.
Surrounded by coal miners at a White House ceremony, Trump signed an executive order directing Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to enter into long-term agreements that include coal.
Trump was called the "undisputed champion of coal" at the event, during which industry leaders presented him with a trophy.
Trump has repeatedly advocated for the use of what he calls "beautiful clean coal" since returning to office in January 2025.
In April, he signed measures for "turbo coal mining" and more than doubling electricity production to keep pace with China in the race for energy-hungry artificial intelligence technology.
Trump seeks to erase the green policies of his Democratic predecessors Barack Obama and Joe Biden. On Thursday, he will overturn a significant scientific finding that greenhouse gases endanger public health – the basis of US regulations to curb pollution that warms the planet.
