Trump announced sending additional troops to Afghanistan to fight the Taliban

US President Donald Trump announced on Monday an increase in the number of US soldiers in Afghanistan, as part of a new strategy for the region, announcing a fight to victory in the longest war in which America is participating, reports Patria news agency.

In his speech from a military base near Washington, Trump said that his new approach aims to prevent Afghanistan from becoming a safe haven for Islamist militants targeting the United States.

Before becoming president, Trump had repeatedly criticized his predecessors for what he called a bad strategy in Afghanistan. Now he is facing the same problems, the Taliban in Afghanistan are strengthening day by day, while the government in Kabul is weak and has no real answer to this problem.

He said that America's enemies in Afghanistan should know that they cannot hide anywhere and that no place is beyond the reach of American weapons.

- Our forces will fight to win - said the American president.

In a speech with few details, Trump did not say how many soldiers would be sent to Afghanistan, nor did he give a timeframe for the end of the US presence in Afghanistan, nor for pressure on Pakistan, India and NATO allies to increase their own activities.

American media reported that Trump signed an agreement with Defense Secretary James Mattis to send about 4,000 additional soldiers to the 8,400 currently in Afghanistan.

Trump also announced a stricter approach towards Pakistan if the country does not cooperate more in the fight against militants hiding in Pakistan.
