(Patria) - US President Donald Trump said yesterday that any country buying oil or gas from Venezuela will have to pay 25% tariffs in trade with the US.
These "secondary tariffs" will come into effect on April 2, Trump announced on the social platform Truth Social.
He pointed out that he is introducing this measure because Venezuela sent "tens of thousands of very violent people" to the US.
China, which has already been targeted by US tariffs, is the largest buyer of Venezuelan oil, the main export product of this member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
Spain, Italy, Cuba, and India are also among the buyers.
The US is expected to stop importing oil from Venezuela in early April, unless Trump postpones that decision.
Earlier this month, Trump invoked the 1798 law on foreign enemies to justify the deportation of alleged members of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua.
