(Patria) – Although it seemed for a moment that he intended to admit electoral defeat, US President Donald Trump took a step back and said he does not recognize "anything", while the newly elected Biden has already begun to focus on the coronavirus pandemic and has arranged meetings with pharmaceutical companies in this regard to discuss the vaccine.
Ron Klain, the newly elected Biden's White House Chief of Staff, called on the Trump administration to begin the transition period and transfer of duties, which he called vital for national security, as well as for the fight against COVID-19.
For Biden, who takes office on January 20, fighting the pandemic will be the top priority.
Klain revealed that Biden's science advisors will meet with representatives of Pfizer, as well as other pharmaceutical companies, with the aim of preparing a "giant logistical project" that involves mass vaccination against the virus that has claimed more than 245,000 lives in the US and left millions jobless.
Trump continues to challenge the election results through the media and Twitter, and is accompanied by mass protests by his voters, the last of which was in Washington. Trump still claims that it is an election fraud.
– He won because the election was rigged, Trump wrote without mentioning Biden's name. Just 90 minutes later, he added: 'He only won in the eyes of the FAKE NEWS MEDIA. I recognize NOTHING! We are going all the way to the end. This was a RIGGED ELECTION! We will WIN', he added at the end.
Klain said on TV NBC's 'Meet the Press' that "Donald Trump's tweet does not decide whether Joe Biden is president. The American people decided.".
The decision of the US General Services Administration (GSA), led by a Trump appointee, not to declare Biden president has prevented Biden and his team from gaining access to government offices and the finances needed by the new administration for a timely transition.
Klain called on the GSA to officially recognize Biden, stating that it is necessary for the new president to be briefed by the intelligence services before taking office, as well as to coordinate with the White House Coronavirus Task Force.
– Joe Biden will become the new president of the US in the midst of an existing crisis. The transition must be seamless, Klain emphasized.
A timely transition is also necessary for the government to prepare for mass vaccination at the beginning of next year. Pfizer announced last week that the vaccine proved to be more than 90% effective in clinical trials, giving hope that the pandemic in the US could be brought under control in the coming months, Reuters reports.
