Trump mocks Democrats and insults Pelosi at first campaign rally since assassination attempt

(Patria) - Donald Trump held his first campaign rally on Saturday since surviving an assassination attempt, mocking Democrats and comparing former Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to a "dog", Reuters reported.

After calling for national unity earlier this week, Trump returned to his usual campaign tactics, using sometimes insulting language for his opponents and repeating false claims about immigration, the economy, and election fraud, key elements of his speech on Saturday.

Trump mocked President Joe Biden as weak. He also mocked leading Democrats, including Pelosi, for trying to persuade Biden to end his reelection bid. There was a heavy police presence at Trump's rally in Grand Rapids on Saturday. Fresh from the nomination convention in Milwaukee, where his takeover of the Republican Party was cemented, Trump appeared in Grand Rapids with his new vice presidential pick, Senator J. D. Vance of Ohio. They took the stage in their first campaign together with the Republican Party united behind them.

In contrast, it is no longer certain that Biden will be the Democratic Party's candidate to face Trump in the November 5 election.

Trump attacked Democrats, saying they want to remove Biden from the ticket after he won their presidential nomination contest. "They have a few problems. Number one, they have no idea who their candidate is," he said with a sneer. "This guy goes and gets the votes, and now they want to take them away."

Speaking of Pelosi, he said: "She turned against him like a dog. She's crazy as a bedbug." Steven Cheung, a spokesman for Trump's campaign, when asked for comment on Trump's "dog" remark, wrote: "Hahahahahaha."

Trump mentioned the assassination attempt several times on Saturday. "I hope I don't have to go through that again. It was so terrible," he said.

Public opinion polls indicate a tight race between Trump and Biden nationally, but Biden lags in states that will likely determine the winner.
