India and Pakistan will resolve their mutual relations, stated US President Donald Trump on Friday, as tensions between the two neighboring countries grew after an attack in the Indian region of Kashmir, which was the worst in almost two decades, Reuters reported.
Trump, speaking to reporters on Air Force One, mentioned the historical conflict in the disputed border region and said he knows the leaders of both countries, but did not answer a question about whether he would contact them.
"They will resolve it one way or another," he said while traveling on the plane. "There is great tension between Pakistan and India, but there always has been."
On Tuesday, 26 people were killed at a tourist spot in Kashmir. India stated that Pakistani elements were involved in the attack, which Islamabad denies.
Both India and Pakistan claim the region of Kashmir and have fought two wars over the area.
Relations between the two South Asian nations deteriorated in the days following the attack, with India abandoning a key water-sharing pact and Pakistan closing its airspace to Indian airlines. Their trade is also threatened.
On Friday, Indian stock markets fell due to fears of new tensions as Indian authorities searched for militants in the region, before markets recovered some losses.
