(Patria) - US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping spoke by phone yesterday, Chinese state media and a US official reported.
The goal of the talks was to reach an agreement that would help the video application TikTok remain online in the US and ease tensions between the two superpowers in a trade dispute.
Details of their conversation were not released in the report by Chinese state television CCTV, nor did the White House respond to news outlets' requests for comment.
A long-awaited deal on TikTok could be near, and Trump and Xi discussed the terms yesterday.
Senior officials from both sides reached a "framework" agreement this week. Reports suggest it could result in the sale of TikTok's US operations to a group of American companies.
If an agreement is reached, it would be a move that one expert called a "rare breakthrough" in trade negotiations between the US and China - and one that would resolve an issue that has been making headlines for years.
Trump had previously stated that an agreement had been reached between the US and China on the continuation of TikTok's operations in the US and that he would discuss it with Xi.
