Trump and Putin to discuss modalities of ceasefire in Ukraine today

(Patria) - Presidents of the USA Donald Trump and Russia Vladimir Putin will discuss the modalities of a ceasefire on the battlefield in Ukraine today. The news was first announced in Washington, and then in Moscow.

- I think we are doing well with Russia and we will see if we can announce something because I will be talking to President Putin on Tuesday, and a lot of work has already been done over the weekend. We want to see if we can end this war. Maybe we can, maybe we can't, but I think we have a very good chance - Trump said.

When asked by journalists what concessions he intends to seek from Putin, Trump replied that he will "discuss territory", i.e. parts of Ukraine occupied by Russia.

- It's a lot of land. It's very different than before the war, as you know. We will discuss power plants because that is a big issue. But, I think we have already talked a lot with both sides, Ukraine and Russia. We are already talking about it, about the division of certain assets. Yes, and they are working on it - Trump said.

The power plant he is referring to is the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which Ukrainians want back as it supplies electricity to a large part of their country, but Russian soldiers have held it since 2022.

Trump's words about the upcoming conversation with Putin were also confirmed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

- Yes, such a conversation is being prepared for Tuesday - he answered the question about contacts between the heads of state, but did not reveal what they would discuss.

- We never do that, we never get ahead of events. The conversation is being prepared. In our understanding, of course, conversations between two presidents are not subject to any a priori discussion of content. Therefore, we will not do that - Peskov stated.

The last time Putin and Trump spoke by phone was on February 12, for almost an hour and a half. Among other things, they discussed resolving the situation in Ukraine, as well as numerous areas where the US and Russia have interests, from Iran to Antarctica.

They agreed to continue contacts, including the issue of organizing a personal meeting. Accordingly, US negotiators will travel to Russia in the coming days for further talks, and the content will likely depend on the results of the phone meeting between Trump and Putin.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed slightly more information, according to whom there are plan A and plan B for ending the war in Ukraine.

- This is a complex, three-year war that is taking place along a very long military front, with a lot of complexity. So, nobody is claiming it's easy, but I want everyone to understand, here's the plan. Plan A is to stop the shooting so we can move on to plan B, the second phase, and that is to have everyone at the table, perhaps with a little shuttle diplomacy, to figure out how to permanently end this war and respect everyone's needs.

Nobody claims that second part is easy, but we can't even get to that second part until we get through the first part - Rubio stated in an interview with CBS News.

In his opinion, it will take a lot of effort and concessions from both sides, but it must happen.

- This war cannot continue. President Trump has been clear about that and is doing everything he can to bring it to an end - Rubio added.
