(Patria) - US President Donald Trump stated that he will give Hamas a chance to respect the ceasefire agreement in Gaza with Israel, but warned that the group will be "obliterated" if they do not.
"We have a deal with Hamas that they will be very good, they will behave, they will be nice," Trump told reporters at the White House while hosting Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, AFP reported.
"And if they are not, we are going to go in and obliterate them, if we have to. They will be obliterated, and they know it."
Trump's comments came after two of his top envoys met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu after weekend violence threatened to destroy a fragile ceasefire that the US President had brokered nearly two weeks ago.
Trump insisted that US forces would not be used against Hamas, saying that dozens of countries that had agreed to join international stabilization forces for Gaza would "love to go in".
"Besides that, you have Israel would go in in two minutes, if I asked them to go in," Trump said.
"But we haven't said that right now. We're going to give them a little chance and hopefully there will be a little less violence. But right now, you know, they are violent people."
Trump said Hamas is now much weaker, especially given that regional backer Iran is unlikely to intervene on its behalf after US and Israeli attacks earlier this year.
