(Patria) - US President Donald Trump congratulated Ali al-Zaidy on his nomination for the new prime minister of Iraq, saying he looks forward to a very productive new relationship, Reuters reported.
The Iraqi alliance of Shiite political blocs, the Coordination Framework, on Monday nominated Zaidy as its candidate for the post of prime minister, according to a statement from the coalition.
"We wish him success in working to form a new government free from terrorism that could bring a brighter future to Iraq," Trump said in a post on his social media network Truth Social.
"We look forward to a strong, vibrant, and very productive new relationship between Iraq and the United States."
In January, Trump threatened to withdraw Washington's support for Iraq if former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was appointed to form the cabinet.
