Trump congratulates Farage, ignores new British Prime Minister Starmer

Former US President Donald Trump celebrated the election of fellow populist Nigel Farage to the British parliament on Friday, while ignoring the new Prime Minister Keir Starmer, AFP reported.

Farage's anti-immigration Reform UK party won the third-largest number of votes, but under the British electoral system secured only five seats, while Starmer's Labour party won convincingly.

"Congratulations to Nigel Farage on his big WIN for Parliament Member amidst the success of the Reform Party in the UK elections. Nigel is a man who truly loves his country!", Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

Farage is a long-time ally of Trump, who called him "Mr. Brexit", and previously said the Briton would do an "excellent job" as UK ambassador to Washington. Farage is a Brexit supporter who was elected to parliament on his eighth attempt and does not hide that he wants to take over the now main opposition Conservative Party, which was defeated by Labour at the polls.

"There is a huge gap in the centre-right of British politics and my job is to fill it," he said after a comfortable victory in Clacton, in eastern England.
