(Patria) – US President Donald Trump condemned "hatred, intolerance, and white supremacy" after the mass shootings last weekend in El Paso and Dayton, in which 31 people lost their lives.
"These dark ideologies must be defeated," Trump said in an address from the White House, adding that "hatred has no place in America" because it "distorts the mind, destroys the heart, and devours the soul."
The US President blames video games and mental disorders for the violence, as well as the internet and social media, which he says contribute to radicalization and incite monstrous crimes, Euronews reports.
Regarding gun laws, on which Republicans and Democrats have extremely opposing views, Trump stated that "those who are deemed a risk to public safety should not have access to weapons," and that he will support a law that allows for the temporary confiscation of weapons from individuals considered risky. He announced that he will propose a law that presumes the death penalty for perpetrators of hate crimes and mass murders.
However, Trump signaled that he will oppose more significant gun control measures insisted upon by Democrats, stating that "the trigger is pulled by hatred, not the gun."
He called on both parties to unite in addressing this issue.
He also alluded to the role of the media in the tragedies, saying that "fake news has significantly contributed to the anger and rage that have been growing in recent years."
