(Patria) - US President Donald Trump threatened to impose 100% tariffs on goods imported from Canada if that country continues with the implementation of the trade agreement with China.
Trump announced on social media that Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is "greatly mistaken" if he thinks Canada will become a "transshipment port" through which China will send goods and products to the United States.
"If Governor Carney thinks he will make Canada a 'transshipment port' through which China will send goods and products to the United States, he is greatly mistaken.
China will literally eat Canada, completely swallow it, including destroying its businesses, social fabric, and general way of life. If Canada makes a deal with China, it will immediately face a 100% tariff on all Canadian goods and products entering the US," Trump wrote on the social network Truth Social.
Although Trump has been waging a trade war on multiple fronts for more than a year, Canada this month agreed to a deal with China to reduce tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, while China, in return, is lowering import taxes on Canadian agricultural products.
Trump's threat comes amid an increasingly heated exchange of accusations between him and Carney, while the US president's initiative to acquire Greenland further strains relations within NATO.
Trump stated this week while in Davos, Switzerland, that "Canada survives thanks to the United States." He later withdrew the invitation to Carney to join his newly formed "Peace Committee."
Trump's insistence on acquiring Greenland comes after he has repeatedly questioned Canadian sovereignty and even suggested that Canada should become the 51st federal state of the United States.
