At Istanbul's Ataturk Airport tonight after 9 PM, three separate explosions were heard, and according to information published by CNN at 11:15 PM, 28 people were killed and 60 injured. That number increased, and an hour later the death toll rose to 32, with 88 wounded.
Bozdag, Turkey's Minister of Justice, said: "The suicide attacker first fired a Kalashnikov, then detonated a bomb at the airport entrance.", reports N1, as carried by the Patria news agency.
One of the explosions occurred at the arrivals terminal, and gunfire was also heard.
Shots were fired at the airport from the airport parking lot. A source for N1 said that hand grenades were used. One of the attackers was a suicide bomber, police sources told CNN Turk. Turkish media report that four armed men were seen fleeing the building after the explosion at the terminal.
Officials suspect these were suicide attacks. Taxi drivers are transporting wounded people to nearby hospitals. So far, no one has claimed responsibility for this attack.
A CNN reporter at 11:18 PM reported from the airport terminal. No one is allowed to enter the airport building, where a large number of police are present. Passengers are in fear and shock, unwilling to talk, only wanting to leave the building, the reporter said.
The situation is chaotic, with new information constantly arriving. The latest is that there were three separate coordinated explosions, carried out by three attackers, who then detonated themselves.
The attackers entered the terminal at the airport itself. It is still unknown in which part of the building the explosions occurred. At the airport itself, there are checkpoints where strict controls are carried out, even on cars, and it remains unclear how they managed to enter the well-guarded and secured airport armed.
This is the departures terminal, so it is assumed that the attack occurred at the entrance itself. The Turks have spent hundreds of millions of dollars to improve security at the airport, which is 11th in the world in traffic and third in Europe.
Turkish forces have improved control at the airport itself, but it is obvious that they will now have to do so outside the building as well.
American officials are concerned about everything that is happening.
